5 Single Girl Shows to Binge When You Need a Valentine’s Day Detox
Uncool Confession: I’m actually obsessed with Valentine’s Day. In fact, it’s one of the few holidays that I prefer to celebrate single. Why? Because my favorite Valentine’s Day ritual is to binge watch romantic comedies while stuffing my face full of vegan chocolates and sipping tea from literally any vessel Target has released in honor of the holiday.
That being said, I get why other people roll their eyes at Hallmark’s second biggest sales day. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, some years you just need a break from all of that forced affection. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of 5 newly released streaming shows to serve as your antidote to any Valentine’s Day overdose.
Dollface
If you haven’t already watched season one of Dollface, you’re missing out. Then again, that means you have double the content to binge now so maybe you’re just lucky. The perfect Valentine’s pallet cleanser, this show is all about reclaiming female friendships after a failed relationship. It’s quirky and filled with full blown fantasy sequences worthy of an episode of Ally McBeal on acid. Did I mention there’s a literal cat lady voiced by The Mind Project’s Beth Grant aka Nurse Beverly? (Hulu)
Single Drunk Female
Admittedly, I’ve only watched the first episode of Single Drunk Female, but if you’re looking for a show about who girl who’s hit rock bottom, lost her job, moved in with her mother, and is hanging onto sobriety by a thread, this one’s for you. And since the show’s heroine Sam Fink isn’t technically supposed to date anyone until she’s been sober for a year, those wanting to avoid any romance-related plot lines should be safe for at least a few episodes. Bonus: The Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy plays Sam’s narcissistic mother if you’re craving a small hit of nostalgia with your detox. (Hulu)
Inventing Anna
Need a little girl boss/socialite/scam artist action to lighten up your holiday mood? Shonda Rhimes has you covered. Based on a true story, Inventing Anna is a fascinating tale of how one woman integrated high society and somehow managed to get away with millions. This show has lots of familiar Shondaland faces plus Veep/My Girl’s Anna Chlumsky whose use of Instagram for some clever investigating reporting should feel familiar to us all. (Netflix)
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window
Need more murder with your anti-Valentine celebration? Try The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. Like What Lies Beneath, but with a very dry sense of humor, this show is actually a parody of every “woman who saw a murder or is she just crazy?” thriller of the past two decades. The melodrama is strong with this one, but once you get used to the fact that it’s all in earnest jest, it feels like you’ve been let in on the best inside joke ever. Plus, Kristen Bell…with bangs. (Netflix)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Technically, the new season of Mrs. Maisel doesn’t come out until four days after Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be part of your detox. Or, if you’ve yet to watch the first three seasons, feel free to start the binge now and catch up. Created by the woman who brought you Gilmore Girls, this comedy about an accidental female comic in the 60’s is just as fast paced with the dialogue. Plus, with main character Midge often more focused on her career than her dating life, expect more than a few conversations to pass the Bechdel Test. (Amazon Prime)
