Back in the day, one of my favorite parts of going back to school was the annual opportunity for reinvention. Like most teens in the 90s, I believed all it took for my entire social status to change was one really good makeover montage. I would pour myself over fashion spreads and obsessively watch fall TV previews for weeks in the hopes of somehow transforming my back-to-school self from the outside in.
Needless to say, I never found that magical look to melt away my introversion and suppress my awkwardness around high school boys, but I did get to live vicariously through the fictional characters who got that post-summer vacation makeover right. See: Buffy Summers. Tv’s favorite chosen one was slaying more than just vampires with her back-to-school looks. Season after season she perfectly encompassed the aspirational fashion of the moment while also managing to pull off that allusive year-to-year makeover I craved.
So, in honor of that part of fall where you still need clothing appropriate for a balmy Sunnydale, California climate, here’s a look back at some of Buffy’s back-to-school bests.
1. Welcome to the Hellmouth (Season 1, Episode 1)
When living out my ultimate “new persona” fantasy as the new girl in town, you can’t go wrong with knee-high boots (a Buffy season one staple) and a cropped cardigan.
2. When She Was Bad (Season 2, Episode 1)
Nothing says back-to-school makeover like fresh highlights and a grown-out I Know What You Did ummer bob paired with wide-leg pants & a classic tank.
3. Dead Man’s Party (Season 3, Episode 2)
For those days when you’ve been kicked out of school and have a little extra time to accessorizab a wrap choker and patterned skirt to offset your WFH lingerie top.
4. Living Conditions (Season 4, Episode 2)
Whether you’re moving on from an awful roommate situation or doing an intense fall wardrobe edit, a simple tee with a bandana headband is no-fuss yet still stylish.
5. Buffy vs. Dracula (Season 5, Episode 1)
You’ll know the weather’s crisper when you can finally break out those pink PVC pants.
